His annual show to help funding for younger skaters gets bigger and bigger every year. This time it will be at the new rink that is the official training facility for the Washington Capitals hockey team.

Quote :
Brian Boitano
Sasha Cohen,
Mirai Nagasu,
Yuka Sato & Jason Dungjen,
Jennifer Robinson,
Silvia Fontana & John Zimmerman,
Jeffrey Buttle,
Todd Eldredge,
Steven Cousins,
Michael Weiss,
Armin Mabahnoozadeh
(More skaters to be added later)

I took photos of the rink exterior before it opened. It is connected to a shopping center and built on top of the parking garage!

I went to the 2005 show:

Went to the show yesterday. It was difficult to get there because of an incredible rain storm.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/gallery/2008/09/06/GA2008090601556.html

But I made it there ok. I had to change my route because a major roadway became flooded. pale

I bought standard tickets, and I sold my extra ones because my friends couldn't come. But then I met a friend who had an extra VIP, on-ice ticket Cool .

When I entered the rink area, I noticed that the skaters were practicing on the second rink cheering I stood next to the rink for a few seconds, but then was told by the rink staff to move. So I moved to the upper level and watched behind the glass wall.

Half of the show was the same as the the gala I saw last month in Ontario (see Mariposa thread). Buttle, Jennifer Robinson, Steven Cousins, Yuka Sato, Michael Weiss performed the same programs.

John Zimmerman performed alone :sotr_th43: . He skated sensuously to a Led Zeppelin song. I hope that program makes it to TV this season, such as Stars on Ice or a Steve Disson production.

Rena Inoue and John Baldwin skated to Tom Jones' "Kiss". Almost inappropriate for a younger audience, but strong technically. A pairs routine with people sitting on the ice always scares me.

U.S. champion Mirai Nagasu is taller than when I last saw her, and she's skating well.

The most awkward moment was when we all noticed that Sasha Cohen and Brian Boitano both skated to the song 'Imagine' mdr . Sasha skated first, to the same version she did in Stars on Ice last year. Then Boitano after her. We first thought there was a mistake in the audio, but Brian laughed the first few seconds and then easily outperformed Sasha with his version Twisted Evil . In practice, he did his trademark 'Tano triple Lutz. In the show, he was probably concerned about the spectators on the ice, so he did a double 'Tano Lutz. And how can his middle aged body still do those spread eagles with such ease?! :super:

I didn't take many photos (partially because I took more video, which probably wasn't allowed hide8up , so better not upload them. The videos didn't look as good as the Mariposa videos, anyway, because of the lighting and position. )

There should be professional photos at Weiss' web site soon.

And Weiss mentioned that every skater stayed at his home in order to save money. I wonder who slept with whom, lol.

Oh, I also was able to go to the VIP reception after the show, because of the sudden on-ice ticket. My friend got a photo with John Zimmerman (the photographer had trouble taking the photo; my friend didn't mind; 'take your time' :naughty15kz: ). And I got a photo with Buttle. I said "Good. I got your autograph at 2003 Worlds, and now I have the photo." He said, "oh right...2003 Worlds was here!"

A Tano Lutz (named after Brian BoiTANO?) is when the skater has one arm above the head during the jump.

Here is Boitano doing it at 1982 Skate Canada:

I've seen Valentina Marchei do a double Lutz with both arms above the head.

I have that problem on some computers, too. But if I highlight the link and then press 'Enter', it usually appears. Kodak's web site doesn't make it easy to look at individual photos.
