The interview in "l'Illustré" and the translation:
http://absoluteskating.proboards37.com/index.cgi?board=Stphane&action=display&thread=1649&page=82#174742
I think it is very nice of Stephane to have asked Johnny first if he would mind him coming to train with Viktor Petrenko.
While looking at the photos I was shocked again, because I had forgotten about his short hair, lol. Laughing

Thanx Nina, it's interesting,
however I don't know what will happen (guess no one knows how it will work), but if Steph believes in coach changing, does his best (but I really cheer that Brian's best will be better and better than Steph's best....I wanna see Brian on the top of the podium - again:)

this is what Johnny thinks of it:
"I have received so many letters of concern and support due to the
announcement that Stephane Lambiel will come to train in the same group
as me. I just want to make a more personal statement about this than
what many of you already know. I've known Stephane since I was thirteen
and he was twelve and we both competed in novice boys in a small city
in Slovenia. We continued our rise up the ladder together competing in
various junior grand prix events and junior world competitions and
finally worlds, Olympics, and Grand Prixs. I have nothing but
admiration for what Stephane has done with his career. I think he will
be a very good training mate. I can't see myself training with many
other elite male skaters, but Stephane and I go so far back, and we're
now turning into the "veterans" of our competitions that I don't think
anything bad will come out of this arrangement. I trust that my coaches
will still work with me the same as they did before. I'm at the age,
and maturity that I can understand that nothing Stephane does on a
daily basis can change my ultimate goals or my drive. I will work hard
and do my best regardless if one of my top rivals is there to see it or
not. I know how well my coaching change worked for me last season and
I'm glad that has been recognized by a top athlete no less, and I hope
it will work for Stephane. He is a great person and a wonderful athlete
and I think I can only take positives from training with him."

Hah, are u sure it is written by Johnny? :10_12_91:

It sounds a little weird from his mouth:) Or I'm thinking badly...however if I'd be a famous and more and more successful skater, I wouldn't be happy that another great skater sees day after day my trainings...
But he knows...and I am a little weid girl with interesting way of thinking...

Thanks for the link Nina!

I know it will sound weird in a way, but having read that interview, I somehow feel happy for Steph. Who would have thought that that would ever happen, lol?! It is obvious that he is leaving for the US with an open mind, full of high hopes and expectations and that is nice to see. Only time will tell how it works out for him, though.

In the same breath, I hope Johnny keeps improving as he has been doing this season. I think the presence of Steph will push him.

I think you have to look at Stephane's training at the same rink as Johnny from a different perspective. Note that Johnny has grown up quite a bit in the last year. While some, less mature skaters might see the situation as an invasion (or spy mission, LOL) on their training space and coaches, this arrangement will serve to drive both skaters to perfect the skills which cause each of them problems. It allows Johnny to see what problems Stephane has with his skills and elements and make certain that Johnny can eliminate those same kinds of problems in his own training with the goal of being better than Stephane at that skill. The same is true for Stephane. In the end both skaters will do their absolute best work because each is driving the other to out-do his competitor.

How much actual contact the two will have during on-ice training is questionable, though. I would think that Johnny will have specific times when he's training on the ice apart from those times Stephane has. So I don't thing that this arrangement will be nearly the conflict that some people have imagined it to be.
