| I am guessing he might keep the SP but change the LP. I don't think he will keep the both programs for the next season. But then again, he has messed the SP most of the time this season, while the LP has been his strong point. Didn't he say in a recent Russian interview that he still thinks about the Bolero? I hope that won't be his new LP, I would prefer the old Brian-style,too. But he is obsessed to change his style and show the new Brian... |

| Twice in the past two days I have heard the theme to the film "The Magnificent Seven." on the radio. Both times I think what good music it could be for Brian......strong, manly, dramatic, great imaging & storyline (minus the cowboy hats of course, he could even wear his favourite black & play Yul Brynner - with hair - !!) etc! _________________ ~Sheena~

| I'm not sure if there's been any confirmation as to whether Brian is keeping his LP or not. Obviously the SP is not one he'll be returning to. As to other ideas: 1. I'd love to see Brian (and other skaters) explore Morricone soundtracks beyond Cinema Paradiso and The Mission. Of course, in addition to his ancient Mission LP, Brian did use The Untouchables early in his career - to good effect. I think he could do really well with something like The Ecstasy of Gold from The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, it's been used quite a lot but not, IIRC, in skating, at least not recently (and even if it has, there's always the Yo-Yo Ma version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bI6zLayBeJQ). 2. The Bourne trilogy soundtracks - I guess there are lots of bits and pieces from the trilogy that could work, but I've mostly been listening to the first film's OST and both the main theme and this track, among others, have potential. It has the technoish stuff he often favors, but with a twist. 3. I've been wanting him to skate to the Princess Mononoke symphonic suite for ages, but alas, Brian will never use something with Princess in the title. 4. Brian sometimes brings back old programs as exhibitions - I think the time has come for him to dust off Time and use it as a gala. He said once in an interview that he really liked it, and let's face it, it was pretty much an EX to begin with. |

That music has potential! Maybe we could convince Brian that the word "Princess" is a typo - really the word "Prince"??!! _________________ ~Sheena~

| Funny you guys mention Morricone, I've always wanted someone to skate to DAYS OF HEAVEN. I don't know if it really translates outside of the film but it's beautiful music. I'm sure someone must have but I'm not a completist as far as skating goes. It seems the best part isn't Morricone tho. DoH opening
I love Princess Mononoke. The little tree spirits are so awesome. If you watch the film it's not very Princess-y.
But if he were to use Bolero, I'd be all for it. I can imagine he'd want to take the French gods with him into Worlds in Nice. I had assumed he would choose French composers or musicians.
Did anyone notice I'm a film buff? LOL I probably wouldn't know Bolero was Bolero if it wasn't featured prominently in the opening scenes of Femme Fatale |

There was also a link to a Metalica version of the music, not so bad, maybe Brian might like it - though my personal preference would be for the Yo-Yo ma version, which is lovely! Strong imaging again...Clint Eastwood - the man with no name.... _________________ ~Sheena~

FWIW, the Ecstasy of Gold is played while Tuco searches the graveyard - but yes, I'd imagine most people would connect it with the man with no name. It's powerful stuff for sure! When considering whether something would make good skating music, I tend to look for the step sequence section I think you can definitely spot it here and in Mononoke... which brings me to my next idea:
If Brian wants to try classical again, he could put together something great to Dvorak's symphony no.9 (From the New World). It has slow sections and faster, powerful sections, and there are some obvious bits that would be great for footwork. Also, it's very pretty. |

| I was listening to Linkin Park and I thought it would suit Brian to skate on one of their songs like numb. It's powerful enough I think. |

| It's the off-season, and with very little real skating to discuss (who cares about Yu-Na's show if the men invited are PChan and Lysacek, right?), I figured I'd revive this thread. I still stand by most of what I wrote last year. Since the only person to use Ecstasy of Gold this past season was Ricky Dornbush, who did it all wrong (muzakked version and weird cuts) the Yo-Yo Ma version would still be original and it's gorgeous. The Bourne soundtrack would also be a good choice. I am no longer in favor of Princess Mononoke for him, it does not seem as good a fit as I once thought. In addition, maybe he could do something based on a rock opera? He goes with that sort of thing a lot for exhibitions (e.g. S.O.S., L'Assasymphonie) and seems to do well with that sort of material and to enjoy skating to it. It would also be different from most of his past stuff without forcing him to stretch too much artistically. Although Brian said last year that he intended to work with David Wilson through Sochi, I have my doubts. Wilson is spread too thin and his programs for Brian weren't as good as one might have hoped. In the recent GS interview, he mentioned Albena and Maxim, but what I'd really like to see him go to someone who's proven but not one of the really big names - e.g. Shae-Lynn Bourne, or even a left-field choice like Stephane Lambiel. | Quote: | Brian sometimes brings back old programs as exhibitions - I think the time has come for him to dust off Time and use it as a gala. I wrote this last summer, and he revived Lord of the Dance with a bit of choreo from Time. Heh. |

| I agree. The minute Stephané started choreographing for people I thought Brian should work with him. Especially since everyone gives Brian such a hard time about his spins. Even if it didn't fix anything it would send a good message that we was working with a spin guy and that he was working with an old rival. You gotta pick up the brownie points where you can get them. I am all over the place with what music I think Brian should use. Lately I've been thinking he could use Duran Duran's The Man Who Stole a Leopard for an exhibition program which probably wouldn't be to his liking and I can't really see him doing it, but it's such a sexy song, imo. And I can't get the idea out of my head that Brian should be headed in a sexier more grown-up/manly direction. Anything with that kind of vibe really. I was really disappointed with everyone's exhibition programs this year, except Nathalie & Fabian and Tomas. It seemed like an afterthought for most people, but I think it's very important. As far as the SP and free. I got the idea of Man of La Mancha in my head mainly because it's appropriate since a lot of people think the older skaters have no chance. And it's also tried and true skating music. And it's about self-belief which is one of Brian's main themes in my opinion. I mentioned the soundtrack of Drive in another thread. I don't know if you could really cut anything from of that but I think Brian, being who he is, should go with music that has a story to it that he can act out. Even if it's just music with a certain persona. I think there is a reason that The Matrix and James Bond were such good programs for him. And there are new movies coming out this year that should have great soundtracks as well. Not that I want to see Brian dressed as the Caped Crusader*, but Christopher Nolan/Hans Zimmer soundtracks are always fabulous. I had hoped Brian or someone would use the soundtrack to Inception last year and was surprised not to hear it at all, especially since figure skating is one of the only ways I can think of that you could recreate the floating movements of the dream. You couldn't dance like that without a wire. I don't know maybe someone could get Brian into the Paris premiere of The Dark Knight Rises. That'd be cool. Whatever he does I hope it's 3 new programs that are decidedly Brian. The best thing would probably be to take in as much music/art/performances as he can in his spare time and then see what sticks. I really believe for him maybe more than anyone else the music he uses has to speak to him. *(I had suggested to Plushenko on his forum once that he skate to Superman. So that would be funny lol)

| You have to see Inception. I've watched it probably more than 30 times now. I had seen Blood Diamond but only once so I didn't remember the music. I'm really a movie fan so when I think of soundtrack music I always associate it with the film. I don't know how skaters pick their music, if they just listen to it alone or they like it because they like the movie as well. I don't know how judges react either. Meaning suppose they loved the movie Blood Diamond and someone used it, would that give them a boost? I know for me I go in biased.
Actually now that I think about it I'm willing to bet that Sale/Pelletier had so many people in love with that skate of theirs, regardless of the scores, because it was the theme from Love Story. If you know the film you can't help but carry that emotion into watching their performance. |
