First, Thank you Alex for making a seperate thread for the Olympics! good idea!

I'm probably going to stay awake for the men sp!

I just watched the highlights on Eurosport! I agree with Oana; Aliona & Robin are my absolute favourites! They have so many beautiful and funny transitions. It's really a pleasure to see them skate. I was crossing my fingers for Robin with the 3 toe loop.

I found it a little bit strange that the ukrainian pair got a lower score then Maria-/ Maxim from Russia??

The canadian pair was ok I quess, but the scores were a little too high... She got very close to the board at one point. YIKES!! Too bad that she also felt on the 3 sachow.

Pang and Tong Woow what a beautifil costumes!! I really like the colour blue of there costumes Smile They were skating at such a high level, all of them really! My gosh! I think that they were better then Shin and Zhao, but that's just my opinion!

Ohw b.t.w. why did Shin and Zhao got 1 point deduction? Was is beacause they stopped 2 seconds later after the music had stopped?

What a start of the Olympics! All the pairs are skating at such high level, but then again it's the Olympics...

Manon, S/Z didn't received a deduction, in fact, Pang/Tong who got a deduction for for the reason you posted above.

I had set my alarm clock and got up for the last group at 4:30 and then back to bed Razz I think I'll do the same tonight (Eurosport starts again at 3:45), because I can't stay up every night cafe-reveil ...just for Men's SP and LP of course Wink

I soooooooo wish for Aljona and Robin to take the gold!!! I just loved their SP last night. But I think it will be very difficult or almost impossible, since S/Z have a perfect skate most of the time..
Fingers crossed!!! cheergo1

Great competition, very high level Smile
I love both first couples but I guess that Shen/Zhao a little bit more. They bring me to tears, their skating is so beautiful. But I also adore Aliona/Robin so let the fight tonight decide who'll grab the gold. I think that Pang/Tong were underscored. And again I just didn't enjoy Kavag/Smirnov's SP. I've mentioned several times that I don't really like Mukhortova/Trankov but when they started skating I just felt that my attitude has changed and I don't dislike them as much as before Smile And later on I was so sorry for Maxim Sad He was devastated. It was nice to see that he had support from Maria. The Canadians do seem to be overscored. Zhang's didn't move me as usual and I was almost sure that Stanilav would mess up the toe loop.
It's gonna be a huge fight tonight, can't wait to it. But I'm also going to wake up at 3.45. I have classes at 8 am and a veeery long day before me.

I soooo wish Aliona & Robin were higher Sad It's such a pity that Robin messed up the jumps. But the results are fair I guess. Pant/Tong 2nd in the Lp and Shen/Zhao 1st. It's good. I'm not crazy about this LP os Shen/Zhao but I generally adore their skating so I'm happy for them Smile Unfortunately speed skating dominated figure skating and we couldn't see the penultimate group. And my Internet decided not to work so I couldn't even watch it anywhere else Sad I hope that I won't have any problems during Men's SP!

Wow, what a morning. Can't believe I made it to work at all...

P/T were wonderful. I was not a fan of this team but last year they seemed to morph, kind of what happened to S/Z in 2003, becoming so much better. I was so happy for them and so amazed they did so well. An amazing world record on the LP, which I suppose will stand for a long time.
S/Z to me are breathtaking. A pity about the mistake on the lift, as I wanted them to win both parts of the competition but it was all so great anyway. I wanted this crowning moment for them for sol long and it finally came through.
I am happy that S/S managed to get on the podium. It was such a tough year for them healthwise and just getting there is a big accomplishment.

P/T's medal got me thinking about Brian's situation. There is some similarity between their careers. Both were world champions once, had a few other medals but never managed to live their potential to the fullest (though Brian has been more successful than P/T). Both were bitterly disappointed in Torino. Both fields are now dominated by returing champions, and newer skaters playing the numbers game. I want Brian to win gold very much, but if he were to have his "P/T moemnt", a magical, record-breaking LP and end up with silver I will be happy, too.

Oh, well, I'm too tired to think streight, anyway. You can just guess how much work I can get done today.

Lonnie

What a pity for Aliona & Robin, i so wanted them to win Sad But i hope that this defeat will motivate them to continue until the next Olympics and then grab gold.

All in all, it was a beautiful competition and a tough battle in the pairs event. Shen & Zhao were impressive as usual. Although it wasn't my favourite program of theirs, i can't deny that they deserved to win & that they pulled off an amazing comeback. And Pang & Tong were fantastic last night, it was the first time i actually liked them. But as much as i liked the Chinese pairs, watching them skate never gave me the goosebumps and the beautiful feeling i get when Aliona & Robin skate, that's why i hope with all my heart that S&S won't give up and keep fighting for their Olympic gold.

That is interesing because it is exactly how I feel about the Germans - I can appreciate thei quality, but their programs, no matter how beautiful, leave me cold. I just don't get any feeling from them. OTOH S/Z just emitt feelings, to me. Again, this is somthing that they couldn't do in the early years of thei career, when they were purely technicians.

I also hope that S/S go on for a few more years. I am hoping that S/Z's success will push other skaters to stay on for a lot more - if they can win OGM at 31/36 years old - anything is possible.

BTW, if Patrick Chan thought that Plushy is old, what does he think about S/Z?...

Well, that was interesting to say the least. I'm ecstatic for all the medalists, but particularly Shen and Zhao. Overall though, the pairs LP was so disappointing after the great SP. Everyone seemed to have mistakes, except for Pang and Tong.
