ISU has granted Plushenko an exemption to compete at Euros next month:

Thanks for the link, Malgosia. That Plushenko gets an exemption to compete at Euros is no real surprise. I wonder how many onther exemptions he'll be given to compete elsewhere?

Looks to me like the Russian report is a bit premature, and that there is no decision yet from the ISU. There's nothing on the subject on the ISU website, and with the holidays, I don't expect there to be anything before next week. It's very likely the request will be granted, but let's not get ahead of ourselves...

To be honest, I don't like the attempt to get past the rules, but I would like to see the rule changed to include an exemption for top skaters - e.g., I don't think Joannie Rochette or Laura Lepisto should be required to post a minimum score should they return to competition, either.

This article says it's official - but as you said, nothing on ISU website yet:
http://en.ria.ru/sports/20111230/170564533.html

Adrian Schultheiss won't compete at Euros (recovering from back surgery) but hope to be ready for worlds:

And now it actually is official: the ISU gave Plushenko an exemption for Euros only. I especially like this part:

Quote :
Plushenko was unable, for different reasons, to obtain the required minimum score in an International Competition during the ongoing and past season.
Yes, because you made him ineligible! I mean, I thought the loss of eligibility was ludicrous (he was given permission to do a show, then it was revoked when he was already contractually obligated) but if the ISU cares so little for its own rules, why should the skaters and the coaches care?

It doesn't actually matter that it is only for Euros - can anyone not see Plushnko not achieving the minimum score in Sheffield & being eligible for Worlds if he wants to go there?

I doubt if it will make much difference to the ticket sales, it seems that the only saleable skaters in GB are Torvil & Dean & they are in the "Dancing on Ice" tv show - featuring "Bolero" of course! English soccer history stalled in 1966 & English skating in 1984....

Plushy's exemption was not a big surprise. grrrrrrrrrmur
But how is the ticket sales going? If the general public is not interested in figure skating in the UK, I wonder why did they want to host the competition? Was is supposed to be a some sort of farewell to the Kerrs which failed?

1. I think this is actually a message to Plushy - either go to Euros, or don't ask again if you decide otherwise.

2. I told someone that on another forum, that I can't see any active skater who'd have a major effect on ticket sales in the UK. Not even a Kerrs comeback (please come back, Kerrs!) would accomplish such a thing, IMO.

3. It shouldn't matter to Brian is Plushy is there or not; he needs to focus on 1. getting over his 3Lz issues b. selling his LP off the ice "yes, we made all these changes to make it CoP friendly, David worked so hard to make it better blah blah" c. finding a way to convince the judges that his SP is not a show program.

Lina

Lina, I suggest you google "accomodation in Sheffield". There are two main sites www.booking.com & www.laterooms.com There are hotels (of various quality & price) & B&B's & there are also apartments, some on these sites, & also at www.citycrashpad.com

Google should find all these sites for you. Make sure that the accomodation is in the city & not miles away!

I'm not sure what is still available but I hope get somewhere suitable!

You know me - No. 1 BJDG cycnic!

I have just checked the website, the most sold out day is Saturday, followed by Sunday & there are still some tickets left. On Wednesday there are still front row (in the front sections) seats available - few people in GB will be aware that there are the World's top three pairs competing on that day.

ISU are supposed to be encouraging skating in struggling countries - I imagine that is why NISA got this event. Doubtless there will be plenty of disinterested school children brought in on Monday - Friday afternoons to fill the seats, playing on their mobiles, talking loudly & running around during programmes.....

I also agree with Yulie, Brian needs to ignore the opposition & focus on himself.

P.S. I had been wondering about this but if Plushenko competes he will have to do the qualifiers as he is ranked below Gachinski & Vonorov! This is according to the entry lists now published.

I've just read that Alexander Smirnov had his appendix removed yesterday & is now doubtful for Europeans. Good news is that he is recovering well!

It's great to hear that at least some events are sold out!

I have understood that Plushenko's goal is not to go the World's this season. He will have a some sort of surgery after the Euros and also he doesn't think he is on par with Chan and Takahashi yet.

These are excellent ponts:

But it will matter to Brian, because imo, Plushy is already locked to podium, unless he injures himself before the competition. The judges will give him high PCS and there will be a lot of grrrrrrrrrmur after the competition.

Yeah, very justifiable notice!
Plushenko really might get high PCS on the Euros like on the Russian Nationals Crying or Very sad
But if Plushenko will make some mistake and Brian will skate very good programme, I'm not already so sure that Plushenko will beat Brian.
I know for Brian's injuries in this season but I can't take away Brian chances before the Europeans.
I think Brian is more confident now after his winning at the French Nationals, he trains and for sure wants to prepare very well to this competition.
I'm simply such person who always believes in Brian, even if it's difficult, I can't differently, it's not in my style!

I totally agree with the words of the Russian commentator who said during Brian's warm up before his short programme at the Cup of China 2010:
"Brian can everything!" Drapeau

I would like Brian dueled a great fight against Plushenko and other skaters in Sheffield Very Happy
Honestly I will say that I'm waiting for that and I know very well that it will depend on Brian's form on this competition.
ALLEZ BRIAN!!! Je suis toujours avec toi!!!allezBrian
