Really good interview - Russian interviews are the best, aren't they? Everyone seems more honest and thoughtful.

Music for the Olympic season already picked, huh? Please don't let it be Bolero... pale You know, considering that the French ladies and pairs are showing some promise, I think France may have a shot in the team event.

I do like his attitude about learning from others.

Here's a report about Euros and what happened from Veronique Guyon's perspective.

Thanks! First of all Veronique knew that Brian has had these issues, this was nothing new. Still, she seems to be a bit surprised and doesn't say they would have worked with the issue. Secondly what she told "There wasn't much to say. I tried to focus on technical aspects." Of course there was a lot to say! To make Brian believe in himself. IMO, Veronique sounds as lost as Brian.

That's exactly what came into my mind when I read the article. I think she needs to work on that as a coach. She has to "raise" him more, give him confidence. She should be more like Brian Orser or Morozov. She's very good at technical part but on mental part...

My take on it is that she is focused on the technical side of coaching Brian. Assuming that's the case, she can help him to a limited degree with mental prep and encourage him to seek help for other issues, but cannot provide the same support and tools that a sports psychologist might. As for her choice to focus on the technical stuff in Sheffield, I read it as an attempt to get Brian to focus on something concrete and thus limit the damage from the mental stuff he was dealing with.

Brian has said in the past that he has to be confident in his tech in order to feel confident on the ice. It is possible that Veronique saw that he was in good shape physically and that he was, at least superficially, mentally ready for Euros, and didn't expect any issues to pop up so late in the game.

It is very hard to say what happened exactly; you really never know which Brian will show up in competition these days. I'm not sure even Brian can predict it anymore.

BTW, even Orser and Morozov are not miracle workers - re Orser, see Javi's performance at Euros, and his failure to do much with Adam Rippon. For Morozov, there's Florent's poor showing on the GP and Leonova's struggles in Sheffield. Unless you have a skater who is a born competitor, like Plush or Lysacek, I think there's only so much a coach can do.

I don't know how much Brian really needs a normal coach anymore. He basically just needs a technical specialist plus someone who can support him mentally.

I do think for example Morozov, Orser and Mishin are better mental coaches than Veronique. Javier's skate wasn't a huge meltdown, and I think Orser will start to work with him with his mental strenght. Who knows what kind of methods Morozov uses, he seems to be a bit weird...

If the coach can't help she needs to realize that and hire outside help. Here in Finland Kiira Korpi started to use a sports psychologist after several meltdowns, especially last year. After the Europeans she was very happy and relieved that he was mentally strong enough to medal and told she had many discussions with her sports psychologist before the competition.

Which brings us back to the point it seems everyone here agrees on: he needs a good sports psychologist. But it has to be his decision; Veronique cannot force him to do it.

Maybe if his mum and/or DG suggested it...?

I think the same, some good psychologist really could help Brian, his mental resistance isn't in a good shape.
When I finished to watch Brian's short program from the Olympics in Vancouver, my former friend sent me SMS message that Brian needs some psychologist but frankly speaking I'm not sure if he will decide to do it.
And maybe Brian needs to come back to the work with Jean-Christophe Simond?
I said myself in 2008 that Brian should work with Simond and Browning to the Olympics 2010. Who knows maybe he would get a medal in Vancouver?
His mum knows him the best, DG also might help (they want for sure so that Brian skated great at the Worlds), finally Brian is before very important competition and I really wouldn't like to see how he suffers on the ice rink again! No No No I love him Amour26 that's why I would like everything has gone well! This idea with a sports psychologist seems to be the best solution for Brian in this moment. His gesture after the short program at the Worlds 2011 when he knocked his head by one finger was very meaningful! Brian showed there where is his main problem.
No doubts he has a huge skating skills only his head isn't in the best condition now, I dream that it will change in Nice! ange

Thanks for posting these articles.

I don't understand what he said about Kurt. The only thing I wouldn't trust Kurt Browning with is a leaf blower.

Their collaboration did not end well, for reasons Brian has never discussed (AFAIK). Kurt has said that Brian was supposed to show up to work together on a new SP (presumably this would have been in 2008) and never did. I don't know what exactly went on, but IIRC at some point Kurt talked about how Brian changed a lot of the choreography he'd done for him and dumbed it down; whether he said that before or after their collaboration ended, I don't really know. So I can see why they wouldn't want to work together again. But it is certainly unfortunate; I thought that of all the choreographers Brian has worked with, Kurt was best able to get him to try new things without losing sight of his own style and approach.
