So far, the Worlds medalists have all finished second in their events: Hanyu in SA, Chan in SC and now Takahashi. Interesting.

Looking at the scores, this event could have been winnable if Brian were only in better shape... I mean, Machida is a good skater, but he's certainly not among the very best. And now he'll qualify for the GPF! Japanese men's skating has incerible depth for sure. Anyway, Brian could have at least moved up into the medals with a semi-decent skate today, but there's no point in taking risks with your health. I guess he'll have to make do with winning all the other GPs and the GPF.

I hope Song will be okay, I haven't yet seen the collision but I read it was bad. I'm sure everyone was shaken by it.

Preversly, I was relieved to hear that Brian had to withdraw for medical reasons, because that explained the performance on the SP. He had messed up programs plenty enough but this was the first time (ever) in a short proggrams where he didn't go for a quad and doubled the triple. It was just not like him and I am glad there is a physical reason for it. Hope it's just some bug and that he'll bounce back soon.

If it really is just a bug he should make TEB (although he probably won't be 100%). I know health is more important but he really MUST do a GP. Last year he had to skip the GPs for medical reasons and it hurt his world standing considerably. We have to face it - world standing matter. They impact the starting order of the SP and thus could cost you as much as a point in PCS - and that's a lot. Even winning a B competition is worth less than coming 5th at a GP.

It hurts that it had to happen now, because with the skating shown at CoC he really did have a chance to win it at last...

I really don't share the criticism of the Justice SP. Is it a favorite of mine? No. My favorite was "All for you". But it DOES work. Look at Brian's PCS on the SP last year - at WC, WTT, even Euros when he skated an awful SP - it always scored 39+ in PCS. Who gets more than 40 PCS in the short? Four skaters: Chan, Takahashi, Abbott and recently (for the first time) - Hanyu. Even Kozuka hasn't broken 40. I think this SP scores as much as any of Brian's SPs are likely to score - so long as he skates it well. And since it suits his style he is more likely to skate it well than, say, the flamenco program of 2011.

As for the layout, at Masters he did get the 10% bonus on the 3F, so I assume it is done after the halfway point. I checked the Youtube clip of yeaterday's SP and it seemed to be right in the 01:25 mark - maybe the judge with the stopwatch was also suffering stomach pains. Or maybe Brian got the timing a bit wrong. Anyway, supposedly all he's missing is the 0.85 bonus of the 3A. I'm not saying he should leave points on the table, but training a new short program when he hasn't yet mastered the free, for a 0.85 bonus and maybe a fraction on PCS - it doesn't seem to be worth the risk, IMHO.

Lonnie, sending good thoughts to Brian's stomach...

Golden Skate article about the men's LP. It sounds like the guys were really shaken up by that nasty collision that took out Nan Song; I hope he'll feel better soon.

Here is the relevant part about Brian:
Quote :
Brian Joubert of France withdrew during the morning practice due to illness (abdominal pain and fever).

“I started to feel unwell last Sunday after the gala in Nice,” said the French champion. “I got cold there and then I felt really bad at the airport and on the plane.”

Coach Annick Dumont added that he fainted three times during the flight.

“I hoped to get better, but the short program was a disaster. It didn’t make sense to continue,” Joubert explained. “I don’t really now what it is. I had the same thing two years ago and it took me about three weeks to recover.”

The Frenchman changed his plane ticket and planned to leave Sunday morning. He wanted to return home to Poitiers and see his doctors.
Yikes pale. That sounds bad, and I'm not sure why he was even on the ice for the SP - unless he felt better after getting to China? Trying to win CoC isn't that important in the bigger scheme of things. Get well soon, Brian.

Fainted 3 times? Shocked Fainting is always serious and if it happens three times in a short time, wow! I read on LMDJ that he had this same problem in TEB 2010. Was it the competition when he withdrew because of gastronomical problems, or what? I don't remember anymore?

I really hope he finds out the reason for this. It would be terrible to get the same problems before the Worlds for example. And if takes three weeks to recover, I doubt he can skate at TEB this season.

Titeuf on Passion Passion:

Extract of the paper Equipe today about Brian's fixed rate: «I moved my return forward in France to be able to take exams in the hospital from Monday», specifies Joubert, which recalls a cold snap suffered during a gala in Nice, last week, a kind of "indigestion", but who wouldn't explain everything.

Fainted three times? This is serious. He had no business being on the ice at all. Could have seriously hurt himself (see what happened to two guys who weren't sick). Poor Brian. He just can't catch a break.

Good health!

WTF? affraid I blame figure skating diets. You know leading up to competitions some skaters starve themselves. I'm not saying Brian definitely did that, but in this sport it's a good bet. And being around germy people at this time of year if he had lowered his immunity with a strict diet, it would be easier to get sick.

Here's more about Brian's WD decision - I think (hope) that he realizes trying to compete in that condition was a mistake. FWIW, lots of people get sick this time of year, and long-distance flying wouldn't help, either. I would hope it would be harder to get away with a fad diet at INSEP. Does having only one kidney make him more susceptible to anything? I know that if there are kidney issues sometimes people have to eat less protein, for instance.

Hopefully he'll be recovered for TEB (and if not, in time to do a senior B).

Thanks, Yulie. The ladies at LMDJ saw him before he left for Paris and it seemed like he was at least in good spirits. Maybe he'll have a shot at Cup of China again next year. All the best to Brian in his recovery.
