PostSubject: 2008 U.S. Nationals Jan. 20-27   22.01.08 6:47

I'm so excited for this event, but no new thread yet? So I'll start with some insights!

Women EMILY HUGHES drops out due to a hip injury which means it's inevitable Kimmie Meissner would be on the podium, perhaps winning her second National title in a row. Meissner, the defending champion, was 6th in the Grand Prix Final this season. She's growing on me and I'm liking her more and more especially her personality (AWESOME!). We might question her ability at this year's Nationals because in the GPF, young Caroline Zhang -- aka Ms. Wannabe Michelle Kwan Rolling Eyes -- was ahead of her in 4th place. I believe Meissner has a fighting spirit on her to keep the Zhang kid from reaching the gold medal. Oh yeah, there's Mirai Nagasu and Ashley Wagner, too. Wagner won the bronze at this year's TEB along with Meissner who won silver. Neither Nagasu nor Zhang are eligible to compete at this year's Worlds. They're both 14 years old (but look 10 hehehehe Twisted Evil). Wagner can. She's of age. Even without Emily on the field, Meissner's strengths will still be tested by these up and coming kids. I still believe in Meissner.

Other competitors gunning for the podium:

Alissa Czisny: This stunningly beautiful young lady from Detroit, MI was the bronze medalist at last year's Nationals and went to her first trip to World's where she placed 15th. She's had a tough season at the Grand Prix series (CoC and NHK) but she had a slightly strong showing at NHK playing 6th. Her spins are incredibly gorgeous and so is her spirals. Her jump technique however is frightening. Exclamation Czisny's biggest battle, rather than her rivals, will be the mental state of skating. You know, the whole performing in front of a million people thing and messing up on the jumps and not being able to forget them? Yeah, that. I love Alissa Czisny and I hope she makes it to the podium this Nationals. Along with Meissner, I want her to knock out those kids off that podium!

Beatrisa "Bebe" Liang: She's called the Tasmanian Devil by her coaches Frank Carroll and Ken Congemi. She placed 4th at last year's Nationals, earning the pewter medal. Like Czisny, she also had a tough GP series. But she's a strong skater. Will the Tasmanian Devil rip the guts off of the young up and coming kids to finally get on that podium and onto Worlds... or would they net Bebe and send her off to the zoo?

Men Evan Lysacek and Johnny Weir PART DEUX!!!! I don't really care which one of these two kicks ass, they're both wonderful skaters! Johnny kicked major ass at his two GP competitions, China and his favorite 'hood, Russia. In recent interviews he said he wants to stop doing all these fashion things he really wants to do and focus on skating and skating only until he's done. He changed coaches from Priscilla Hill to Galina Zzzz I can't spell her last name. Razz Galina Z has given Johnny a good spank on the behind for being lackadaisical about his skating and it's worked even if Weir got 4th place at the GPF. I like that Johnny is totally dedicated to skating now. He wants to get that title away from Lysacek's hands and use it to strangle him saying "MY TITLE, B--CH!!!"

Okay so secretly I want Evan to win. Wink His style of skating is wonderful, very masculine, very energetic. The opening to his Tosca LP is WOW! He's amazing. GO EVAN! Evan had a silver streak at his two GP competitions and bronze at the GPF. He did some Disson shows also. I watched Fashion On Ice and he looked real handsome. He skated to Sarah Brightman's famous rendition of "Time to Say Goodbye". Tanith Belbin is so lucky.

Non Evan/Johnny competitors:

Ryan Bradley: He's very energetic and humorous like Evan is. He won silver at last year's Nationals ahead of Weir which was very shocking. He made me happy at last year's Nationals but wtf happened to him this GP season? Poor guy. Sad I hope he can redeem himself at Nationals this year. He's real good.

Jeremy Abbott: Total cutie. Pewter medalist last year and bronze medalist at 4CC's. If not 3rd at least he can repeat his pewter title this year.

Stephen Carriere: Won bronze at NHK this year but I don't know much about him. I'm pretty sure he has pewter potentiality.

Pairs A lot of people in FSU think Castille/Okolski's win last year was a fluke. They haven't been in the GP series due to injury but they're back and ready to defend their title. They have competition, though, from two up and coming teams: Vise/Trent and Mclaughlin/Brubaker. Vise/Trent were the first team to land the quad salchow in competition at this year's TEB. Mclaughlin/Brubaker were silver in both CoC and NHK but withdrew from GPF due to injury. I believe Mclaughlin/Brubaker is THE team to beat at Nationals! They're young and they're strong and they represented US well in the Grand Prix series. We have sucky pair teams. As an American I can't help but say that. Crying or Very sad I want our teams to kick ass at World's.

Teams that were no show at the GP but competing at Nationals.

Inoue/Baldwin: Like C/O they didn't do GP because of injury but this is a team that landed the throw 3a during the Olympic season. Maybe that move caused them injury, IDK. I don't like this team much. Actually I just don't like John Baldwin. lol! Rena is so better.

Nam/Leftheris: I LOVE THIS TEAM and I was so sad they couldn't do GP because of injury! For a new team they did very strongly at the past two Nationals. They couldn't do World's because US can only send two teams and they were bronze. I hope they beat Inoue/Baldwin for the World team. Actually I just want them to win the title!

Notice that the medalist at last year's nationals (C/O, I/B, N/L) were all injured and unable to compete at the GP but are all now coming back for Nats. Omen, maybe? IDK

Dance Oh give the gold to Tanith and Ben already and be done with it. Razz

Seriously, I'm very glad that B/A represents the US very well in ice dancing, a field that's usually dominated by Europeans. They're starting to make me like ice dancing, too. Tanith's very beautiful!!!!

I'm sad that Gregory/Petukhov can't compete at Nats and continue the season because of the injury at SC. I really like this team and hope someday that they beat B/A for the title. And I also hoped that they perform the Fallen Angels program with Johnny again at the exhibition, too! But an injury's an injury. GO G/P! KICK ASS NEXT SEASON!!!!!

Davis and White are medal potentials, too. They're the team who's been together the longest and they're going great. I'm growing with this team, too. They're young and they're really awesome ice dancers. Smile

No problem Mamouna. If anyone also likes to help, feel free!

www.icenetwork.com USFSA's offshoot website for your latest US Nationals coverage and the network for photos and other skating stuffs. I liked it better when they held it as USFSA.com :\ They put up MUCH MORE pix there. The event website is here.

Thanks for posting your commentary on US Nationals, Jojo. I agree with most of it except I happen to kind of like Caroline Zhang more than Kimmie Meissner. This year, Kimmie just hasn't really shown that she should be national champion. Her GP competitions weren't that good, and she just looks discouraged most of the time. And I like that Zhang is a faux-Michelle Kwan. She's USA's figure skating sweetheart, and I think America has been waiting for another girl to take her place.

As for the men's competition, I'm cheering for Evan, and I think that he will beat Johnny. After all, he finished 3rd at the GPF while Johnny did not fair so well. Plus, Evan is always pushing himself to be better, and while Johnny has performed better this season (thanks to the coaching change!), I don't think he can beat Evan.

I don't have much of an opinion on the Ice Dancing and Pairs Skating portion of the competition...we all know Ben and Tanith will win. As far as Pairs, I prefer Mclaughlin/Brubaker because they are young and besides the GPF withdrawal, they have performed well in the international competitions.

I really hate IceNetwork and its poorly designed website. irritated.

1/23: CD and Pairs SP
1/24: OD and Ladies SP (Why is the Ladies SP so soon?! Last year, they showed it live on Friday night.)
1/25: Men's SP
1/26: Pairs LP, Ladies LP and FD
1/27: Men's LP and Exhibition

Who came up with this schedule?! Everything is messed up this year...it must NBC's fault because they're airing Nationals this year. grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

My picks for the winners: Meissner, Weir, Castile/Okolski, Belbin/Agosto

I think so, too. I really don't know if I'll grow to like Zhang like I grew to like Kimmie. Her pearl (oyster? LOL!) spin is fantastic and she still has this cute personality of a carefree kid.

my picks: Belbin/Agosto, Kimmie (as jojo I started to like her this season) as for men let the judges decide Smile
Zhang's layback spin is amazing but I wonder how will her back look like few years later. but it always amazes me how they can skate so well being so young...

Thanks for the Paris SP results, Jojo! And I have to admit that I was a little shocked at how close Belbin/Agosto and Davis/White are...I would have thought it would be a runaway competition.

And I'm glad that McLaughlin/Brubaker are in first even though it is by a slim margin. Too bad they are ineligible for Worlds because she is too young. Neutral Crying or Very sad

Caroline had a bad SP. All skaters have their bad days. I know you don't think highly of Caroline, but after seeing her live at Skate America, I understand the hype. She is magical on the ice and so graceful. She completely deserved the standing ovation after her SP. I hope she (and all the other ladies) have great, clean LPs tomorrow.

The Men's SP is tonight. Go Johnny, Jeremy, and Ryan!!!!! cheers

I figured that she did! I wonder what it was, though. Pressure, maybe? But seeing that is REAL shocking. I thought she'd be one of the three who trumped Meissner to fourth place. You're right... this WILL be an interesting women's competition! Shocked

Edit: They put an article on FSU on Zhang's schedule that she skates 7 days a week and takes 9 online courses, eight of which she got all A's and a B in algebra (haha I was lower than that in high school! Wink ). Michelle Kwan ( Amour26 ) says Zhang is able to train longer than she could but that's only because Zhang's a kid and Kwan's almost 30. I do think Zhang AND Czisny need to focus on their schedules more because I know both of theirs are PACKED. Reading Alissa's blog on her site displayed 472973264892 things she was doing. Hughes and Meissner need to do that, too, with their schedules now that they're both in college (Emily in HARVARD!!!!! Shocked )

Skating 7 days a week? The kid needs to let her body rest. She's prone to injuries doing that! Hopefully the hours are very short!

Haha I was about to post this one. Thank you quintia!

YES I was watching that! He just got down on his knees and I was like WHAT'S HE DOING!!!! BIG congratulations to them!

Still sad for Nam/Leftheris but I have high hopes for them next season. Smile

An hour and a half from now and FD and women's LP on NBC. So excited. Go Kimmie, Alissa, and Davis/White!!!!!

I give a B for NBC's coverage. Aside from chacking Alissa and N/L the whole mics in the kiss and cry and NOT TURNING THEM OFF during the recap of the skaters' program is crazy. And I don't think I wanna hear Kimmie breathing while they talked about her program. lol It was pretty annoying. Besides that I liked Sale and Pelletier there. I liked the truth booth, too.
